A P-plater had a shock in store for police officers who stopped her Mercedes on a busy Melbourne street on New Year’s Day.

Officers thought they had spotted an extra person in the back seat of the vehicle as the 37-year-old woman was driving on Williams Rd in South Yarra about 1.30am on Monday.

When they stopped the vehicle on Toorak Rd and looked inside, they found a staggering total of eight people.

Beside the driver, two people were squashed in the front passenger seat while three people seated normally across the back seats had two more people on their laps.

None of the seven passengers was wearing a seat belt.

The driver was breath-tested and returned an alleged blood alcohol reading of .09 — above the zero blood alcohol limit which applies to probationary drivers under Victorian law.

Police also allege the driver was not displaying her P-plates and the car was not registered.

Police impounded the Mercedes at a cost of $950.

The woman, from St Kilda, is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving, overloaded vehicle, driving unregistered, failing to display P-plates, and driving with passengers not wearing seatbelts.

Three of the passengers, a 26-year-old man and two 36-year-old women, were fined $385 for not wearing seatbelts.
