Police said a 53-year-old woman and her 23-year-old daughter were being badgered by a man who spat on the mother and kicked the younger passenger as they alighted on Cecil Ave in Cannington.

“This incident was observed by an 84-year-old man, who exchanged words with the accused,” WA Police said.

“In response, the accused assaulted the man, resulting in serious facial injuries.”

The alleged victim said he sustained “10, if not more, blows” during the attack.

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch described the incident, and others like it involving the vulnerable, as “disgusting”.

Authorities claim the rampage continued even after the accused left the bus himself.

A public transport officer was allegedly assaulted before he was detained and taken into police custody.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with two counts of common assault, one count of aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm and one count of assaulting a public officer.

The Beckenham man appeared in Armadale Magistrates Court on Wednesday and was denied bail.

He is due in court again in February.
