A warning for a popular beach on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula has been issued after a great white shark was sighted near the pier.
The shark, which is believed to be 4m long, was spotted close to Sorrento Pier at about 5.45pm on Wednesday.
“The shark is a great white, around 4m in size. Any shark over 2m in length is considered dangerous,” VicEmergency said in a statement.
Swimmers have been told to stay out of the water surrounding the pier and to call emergency services or notify lifesavers if they see the shark.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.
Sorrento Pier is popular for swimmers as it has a lower deck area for people to climb off into the water.
