Holiday outing plans have been ruined for the second time in only a week, after theme parks on the Gold Coast closed ahead of dire forecasts of wild weather on New Year’s Day.

Movie World, Dreamworld, Wet’n’Wild and WhiteWater World all announced they would be shut on January 1 due to severe weather forecast in the area — this comes one week after the four venues shut because of the severe thunderstorms sweeping through the state’s southeast on Boxing Day.

“Will be closed today for the safety and wellbeing of our team members and guests,” Movie World said on Facebook.

The closure message was mirrored by Wet’n’Wild, saying both theme parks anticipated reopening on Tuesday.

“We anticipate reopening tomorrow and will provide updates on our social media. Thanks for your understanding,” Wet’n’Wild said.

Dreamworld and WhiteWater World also released similar closure announcements, saying they too would be closed on New Year’s Day, however, no set re-opening date was given.

“We appreciate your patience and look forward to welcoming you back to both parks! Stay tuned for further updates,” Dreamworld said.

Earlier last month, Dreamworld operations came to a sudden halt after a major power outage hit the theme park on December 12.

Frustrated families said they were without food and cold water as temperatures reached 30C in the first week of the school holidays.

A spokesperson from power company Energex said it could not pinpoint what caused the outage that impacted both Dreamworld and Whitewater World.

Power was back up and running by late morning.
