Two people have died and several others, including children, are fighting for life after a devastating crash involving five vehicles west of the Blue Mountains about 12.50pm on Friday.

More than a dozen people were injured — some critically, including a three-year-old — in the collision on The Great Western Hwy, which is now closed in both directions at Wallerawang, west of Lithgow.

Upwards of 80 emergency services personnel arrived at the scene, along with traffic crews and a medical helicopter.

“Two persons have been confirmed deceased,” NSW Police said.

Superintendent Paul Glinn from NSW Police Highway Traffic Command said up to 15 people were transported to hospital.

Five of the crash victims are believed to have sustained critical injuries.

“At this point in time, they’re being treated for their injuries,” Glinn said on Friday.

“From a policing perspective, it was a significant scene.”

NSW Police said the investigation had just begun, and noted the highway “is expected to remain a crime scene for a considerable amount of time”.

The highway was closed about 2km west of Barton Ave, according to the NSW Transport Management Centre.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area, and use Barton Ave, Pipers Flat Rd and Range Rd, in both directions, to get around the closure.
